There is something about the Grand Strand coast that makes family portraits feel effortless. The wide-open shoreline, the warm Carolina light, the way salt air puts everyone at ease before the camera even comes out.
But getting there requires more planning than most families realize. Choosing the right beach, the right timing, the right session all makes a difference. This guide covers everything you need to know so you can show up relaxed and ready.
The beach removes the background problem entirely. No cluttered backyards, no awkward furniture, no competing colors. You get a clean, open canvas with soft sand in the foreground, Atlantic blue in the distance, and that wide Carolina sky overhead. Families relax faster outdoors. Kids run, parents laugh, and those are the moments that turn into the photos you hang on your wall for the next twenty years.
The Grand Strand gives you variety within a short drive. From the busier main beach in Myrtle Beach to the quieter, low-traffic stretches near Surfside and Garden City, you can find exactly the right backdrop depending on the feeling you want.
Spring and fall are the two best windows. March through May brings mild temperatures, low crowds, and soft, even light. The beach is open and uncluttered. Families are not competing with summer tourists for space, and the cooler air makes everyone more comfortable, especially with young children or anyone wearing layers.
September through November is equally strong. The summer crowds clear out after Labor Day and the light gets warmer and more golden as the season moves toward fall. Temperatures stay comfortable well into October, which makes this the most popular booking window for family sessions on the Grand Strand.
Summer sessions are absolutely possible but require careful timing. Midday heat and direct overhead sun are not your friends. If you are booking in June, July, or August, schedule your session at golden hour. That is the last 45 to 60 minutes before sunset when the light turns warm, directional, and flattering for everyone.

Both work. The difference is practical more than photographic.
Morning sessions starting about 30 minutes after sunrise give you soft, directional light, a beach that is almost completely empty, and cool temperatures. For families with young children who are freshest in the morning, this is often the better choice. The tradeoff is the earlier wake-up call, especially for vacation families still adjusting to the time zone.
Evening sessions at golden hour are the most requested for a reason. The light at that time of day has a warmth and softness that flatters everyone. The beach fills in slightly compared to early morning but is still manageable, especially at Surfside and Garden City where foot traffic is lower. If you have a flexible schedule, golden hour is worth building your day around.
Not every stretch of the Grand Strand delivers the same result, and knowing the difference matters before you pick a location.
Surfside Beach is one of the most popular choices for family portrait sessions. The beach is wide and uncrowded, the piers and natural features give you variety within a short walk, and the residential nature of the area means you are not competing with boardwalks, hotels, or heavy foot traffic. It photographs clean and open.
Garden City Beach offers a similar feel. Low-key, wide, and photogenic. The pier at Garden City is a favorite for families who want something with a little more character and structure in the background.
Murrells Inlet and Pawleys Island are worth mentioning for families who want something different from the open Atlantic coast. Pawleys in particular has a natural, unspoiled quality with wide flat sand, maritime grass, and driftwood that feels more editorial than the main strip beaches.
Myrtle Beach proper works well when sessions are timed right. Golden hour on the main beach, with the right stretch of sand, can look beautiful. Just know that the area is busier and requires more planning around foot traffic.
Outfit choice makes a bigger difference than most families expect. For a full breakdown of colors, fabrics, and what to avoid on the Grand Strand, read our complete guide to what to wear for Myrtle Beach family beach photos.
The short version: coordinate without matching, stay in soft neutrals, and go barefoot on the sand whenever you can.
The secret to great kids in family photos is not getting them to pose. It is getting them to move. The best shots of children almost always happen between the poses, when they are running toward the water, digging in the sand, or chasing a sibling.
A few things that help: bring a small snack for after the session so there is something to look forward to. Do not over-hype the session in advance. A casual “we are going to the beach and taking some photos” works better than building it into a big production. Let them know it will be short. Most family sessions run 30 to 60 minutes, which is the right window before attention spans start to drift.
If you have a toddler or infant, schedule the session at the time of day they are typically at their best. Not during nap time, not when they are usually hungry. That one detail matters more than almost anything else.
Fall sessions from September through November book out early. If you are planning a fall session, reaching out in July or August gives you the best selection of dates. Spring fills in more gradually but popular dates go quickly once spring break planning starts in February.
Vacation families often book as soon as they confirm their travel dates, which is the right instinct. The best golden hour windows fill in weeks ahead of time, especially on weekends.
If you are a local family and have flexibility, weekday sessions often give you the most options and a quieter beach experience, especially in the summer months.
