The Alexander family’s beach photo session in Myrtle Beach was a beautiful evening filled with soft coastal light, movement, and plenty of time for everyone to enjoy being together.
Family vacations are one of the few times when everyone can step away from normal routines and spend uninterrupted time together. For the Alexander family, their time at the beach gave us the perfect opportunity to create portraits that captured both the family as a whole and the individual relationships within it.
We photographed the Alexander family during the softer evening light, when the beach begins to change from the brighter colors of the day into warmer and more subtle tones. This time of day also gives families more freedom to move around comfortably while we work with the shoreline, sand, and changing coastal light.
We began with the portraits that are important to every family gallery, including photographs of everyone together and smaller combinations of family members. From there, we introduced more movement and interaction so the session could naturally transition between traditional portraits and candid moments.
Every family brings a different energy to the beach, and that is part of what makes each session unique. With the Alexanders, we focused on keeping everyone comfortable while creating a gallery with plenty of variety.
Some photographs were carefully arranged so everyone could be seen beautifully, while others came from simply giving the family something to do together. Walking along the water, holding hands, interacting with the children, and letting everyone move naturally created expressions that felt genuine to their family.
A complete family gallery should include more than one type of photograph. I always want families to have the classic portraits where everyone is together and looking toward the camera, but I also want to preserve the interactions that happen between those photographs.
Those quieter moments can become some of the most meaningful images in a gallery. A child reaching for a parent’s hand, siblings laughing together, or the family walking along the edge of the water can tell just as much of the story as a traditional family portrait.
One of the advantages of photographing a family at the beach is how much variety we can create within a single location. Small changes in direction, distance from the water, family groupings, and movement can make photographs feel completely different even though they were created only minutes apart.
During the Alexander family’s session, we photographed the entire family together as well as smaller combinations and individual moments. This gives the finished collection more depth and creates photographs that can be enjoyed individually as well as together in an album or throughout the family’s home.
