The Ellis family joined us for an evening of family photos at Myrtle Beach State Park, one of the most beautiful coastal settings along the Grand Strand. With open shoreline, natural dunes, and soft evening light, the park gave us plenty of space to create both classic family portraits and relaxed photographs of everyone simply enjoying the beach together.
This session was photographed around sunset, when the changing light brought warm tones to the sand and a softer look to the ocean. Rather than staying in one place, we moved along the shoreline and let the session naturally unfold as the evening progressed.
One of our favorite things about photographing families near sunset is watching the beach change throughout the session. The light becomes softer, the colors become warmer, and the shoreline takes on a quieter atmosphere as the sun gets lower.
For the Ellis family, we used that changing light to create a gallery with plenty of variety. We photographed the entire family together while also giving the children room to move, play, and enjoy being at the beach.
Family photography does not have to mean standing still and looking at the camera for an entire session. Some of the most meaningful photographs happen between the more traditional portraits, especially when children are given an opportunity to explore and families can interact naturally.
During the Ellis family’s session, we photographed those moments alongside the portraits everyone expects from a family gallery. Walking together, playing near the water, and spending time with the children gave the session movement while keeping the photographs centered on their relationships.
Myrtle Beach State Park offers a coastal landscape with several different elements within one location. The shoreline provides wide ocean views, while the dunes and natural vegetation create softer backgrounds that add variety to a family gallery.
Having that variety allows us to change the look of the photographs without interrupting the flow of the session. Families can walk together, interact near the water, and move between different backgrounds while we continue photographing.
The beach gives children something to do rather than asking them to concentrate on the camera for an extended period. Walking barefoot through the sand, getting close to the water, and interacting with their parents can turn the session into an experience instead of a series of poses.
We still create the traditional photographs families want, but allowing time for movement gives us another layer of images. Those expressions and interactions are often the photographs that become especially meaningful as children grow.
A complete family gallery should document more than one grouping. In addition to portraits of everyone together, we create photographs of parents with their children, siblings together, individual portraits, and other combinations that are meaningful to each family.
Changing the groupings also keeps the session moving. Instead of repeatedly creating the same photograph against the same background, we can build a collection that feels cohesive while still giving the family many different images from their evening together.
As sunset approaches, the quality of light along the beach changes quickly. The brightness becomes softer and the colors along the shoreline become more subtle, creating flattering conditions for portraits while still preserving the atmosphere of the coast.
For this session, that progression gave the Ellis family photographs from several stages of the evening rather than a gallery where every image looked exactly the same.
