Senior year arrives quickly. One season you are planning for it, and the next it is here. Senior pictures are one of the few things that slow that moment down and give it a place to live.
Myrtle Beach is one of the most sought-after locations in South Carolina for senior portraits because of what it offers in a single session: open shorelines, coastal marshes, historic parks, and golden light that is unlike anywhere inland. Families drive from Charlotte, Columbia, and Raleigh specifically to photograph here.
This guide covers the top locations, what to wear, and how to choose the right time of day so your session feels as good as it looks. If you are ready to book or want to see full session galleries, visit our Myrtle Beach senior photographers page.
The Grand Strand offers more variety per square mile than almost any other coastal region in the South. These are the locations we return to most often and why each one works.
Huntington Beach State Park is our most requested location for senior sessions, and it earns that reputation. The park offers pristine beach access, tall marsh grasses, wide lagoon views, and the weathered stone walls of Atalaya Castle all within walking distance of each other. A single session here can move through four or five completely different environments without ever getting in a car. The light here, especially in the hour before sunset, is consistently soft and warm. If you are weighing locations and can only choose one, this is the one.

Myrtle Beach State Park offers a quieter stretch of coastline than the main beach, paired with wooded walking paths and a classic pier backdrop. It is a strong choice for seniors who want a mix of greenery and ocean without the crowds. The wooded entry path alone photographs beautifully in early morning light.
The Marshwalk is one of the most visually distinct locations on the Grand Strand. The raised wooden boardwalk runs along open water, and the marsh grasses and inlet views create a layered, painterly background that does not look like anywhere else. Sessions here near sunset pick up warm reflected light off the water. It is a particularly strong choice for seniors who want something that feels South Carolina through and through.
Pawleys Island has a quieter, more secluded feel than Myrtle Beach proper. The beach is wide, the dunes are tall, and the homes along the island have that timeless coastal character that photographs in a way nothing else does. Seniors who want a more elevated, fashion-forward look tend to gravitate here.
The boardwalk brings energy, color, and a distinctly coastal-town feel. It works best for seniors who want something livelier and more editorial. The SkyWheel, ocean views, and architectural details give the images a sense of place that feels fun and real.
Brookgreen and the surrounding Litchfield area offer live oaks draped in Spanish moss, manicured garden paths, and a quieter, more classic landscape. This setting suits seniors who want portraits that feel timeless and polished rather than beach-forward.
Outfit choices make a significant difference in how senior pictures turn out. Coastal light is beautiful but unforgiving of busy patterns and overly bright colors. A few simple guidelines go a long way.
Soft neutrals, earth tones, creams, dusty blues, sage greens, and warm whites all perform beautifully against sand, water, and marsh backgrounds. These shades complement the natural palette of the Grand Strand without competing with it. Deep jewel tones like navy and burgundy also photograph well, especially for fall sessions.
Neon colors, large graphics, and busy patterns tend to draw attention away from the person wearing them. Bright white can wash out in direct coastal light. All-black outfits can work in the right context but absorb heat quickly during summer sessions and limit how the light falls across the subject.
For a Signature or Full Experience session, we recommend two outfits that offer contrast: one more relaxed and casual, one slightly more elevated or fashion-forward. This gives the final gallery real range. For a Classic session, one well-chosen outfit is enough.

Both work beautifully along the Grand Strand, and the right choice depends more on your priorities than on which light is technically better.
Sunrise sessions start early, typically around 6:30 to 7:00 AM depending on the time of year, but they offer something that cannot be replicated later in the day: a completely empty beach. No crowds, no strangers in the background, no noise. The light at sunrise is soft and cool, often with pastel pinks and lavender tones in the sky. For seniors who want clean, uncluttered images with a calm, airy feel, sunrise is the right call.
Sunset sessions are warmer in every sense. The light is golden and directional, which creates depth and dimension in portraits that flat midday light cannot. The tradeoff is that the beach and boardwalk areas will have more activity in the late afternoon, which can require working around other people. For most of our inland locations like Murrells Inlet and Brookgreen, this is not an issue at all. Sunset is the most popular choice and for good reason.
Most families book four to six months in advance, especially for summer and fall sessions which fill quickly. The earlier you book, the more flexibility you have with location, timing, and scheduling around school or activity calendars.
