The Maher family’s beach photo session at Myrtle Beach State Park was filled with beautiful coastal light, playful moments, and plenty of time for everyone to simply enjoy being together.
Family vacations bring everyone together in one place, which makes them such a meaningful time to create photographs. For the Maher family, the beach provided a relaxed setting where we could create traditional family portraits while also documenting the smaller moments happening naturally between them.
Myrtle Beach State Park gave us a beautiful variety of coastal backgrounds for the Maher family’s session. The dunes, sea oats, open shoreline, and ocean created several different looks without requiring the family to travel between multiple locations.
We started with relaxed family portraits and gradually introduced more movement as everyone became comfortable in front of the camera. The kids could walk barefoot through the sand, play near the water, and interact with their parents while I photographed both the planned portraits and the moments happening in between.
Every family has its own personality, and the Mahers brought a wonderful sense of warmth and playfulness to their session. Rather than trying to make every photograph look exactly the same, we created a mixture of classic portraits, candid interactions, walking photographs, and playful moments near the water.
That variety is important because a family gallery should tell a more complete story. The portraits where everyone is looking toward the camera matter, but so do the photographs of parents interacting with their children, siblings laughing together, and everyone enjoying the beach.
My approach to family sessions combines direction with enough freedom for real interaction to happen. I guide families into flattering positions and create the important group portraits first, but I also look for opportunities to introduce movement and give children room to be themselves.
Walking together, holding hands, playing near the shoreline, and interacting naturally can create expressions that are difficult to reproduce with a completely posed photograph. Those moments help give a finished gallery personality while still keeping the overall look polished and timeless.
One of my favorite things about photographing families during vacation is knowing how much these images can change in meaning over time. Children grow quickly, families change, and a week spent together at the beach eventually becomes part of the family’s history.
The Maher family’s photographs preserve more than what everyone looked like during this particular trip. They preserve the relationships, expressions, personalities, and little interactions that made this season of their family unique.
