Planning family beach photos during a Myrtle Beach vacation should feel exciting, not stressful. A little preparation can make a huge difference, especially when you are coordinating children, outfits, vacation schedules, beach conditions, and the South Carolina weather.
After photographing families along the South Carolina coast for nearly 20 years, I have learned that the best family beach photos are rarely about creating perfect poses. Beautiful light, thoughtful planning, comfortable clothing, and giving your family room to enjoy the experience are what make the biggest difference. Here are seven tips I recommend when planning family beach photos in Myrtle Beach.
Light is one of the most important parts of creating beautiful family beach photos. The middle of the day can be extremely bright along the Myrtle Beach coast, creating harsh shadows and making it difficult for everyone to comfortably look toward the camera. Sunrise and the time leading up to sunset typically provide much softer and more flattering natural light.
Sunset is popular with families because of the warm evening light, while sunrise can provide quieter beaches, cooler temperatures, and beautiful morning colors. If you are traveling with young children, their normal sleep and meal schedules should also be considered. The best light matters, but so does having children who are rested and comfortable.

What your family wears has a big influence on the overall look of your photographs. Instead of putting everyone in identical outfits, choose colors and fabrics that coordinate naturally while still allowing each person to look like themselves.
Soft neutrals, creams, light blues, muted pastels, and natural tones work beautifully against the sand, ocean water, and coastal light. Lightweight fabrics such as linen and cotton are comfortable on the beach and can create beautiful movement when there is an ocean breeze.

One of the biggest concerns parents have before family photos is whether their children will sit still, look at the camera, or cooperate for the entire session. They do not need to.
We create the important family portraits where everyone is looking toward the camera, but a complete gallery should include much more than that. Walking along the shoreline, holding hands, playing with your children, running through the sand, and simply interacting together can create some of the most meaningful photographs from the session.
Giving children opportunities to move also takes pressure off them. Instead of asking a young child to perform for the camera for an entire session, I can photograph their personality while still guiding the family into photographs that feel polished and intentional.

Wind is a normal part of taking photos at the beach. Instead of expecting perfectly still conditions, we work with the environment. Movement in hair, dresses, and lightweight fabrics can actually add life and dimension to photographs when it is handled correctly.
Weather along the Myrtle Beach coast can also change quickly. Clouds or a chance of rain earlier in the day do not necessarily mean a session needs to be canceled. Coastal conditions can look completely different a few hours later, which is why I watch the local weather, wind, clouds, and available light as each session approaches.
Not every stretch of beach along the Grand Strand looks or photographs the same. Some locations provide wide open shoreline and unobstructed ocean views, while others include dunes, sea oats, piers, trees, or quieter areas away from larger crowds.
The best location can depend on your family size, children’s ages, season, weather, where you are staying, and the overall look you want from your photographs. Larger extended families may need more open space, while families with younger children may benefit from locations that require less walking.

Keeping things simple makes a family beach session easier. Water, a few wipes, a hairbrush, and a small clean snack for younger children are usually enough for most families.
Avoid carrying large bags or bringing unnecessary belongings onto the beach whenever possible. Before we begin, check pockets for phones, keys, wallets, sunglasses cases, and anything else that might create visible shapes underneath clothing.

The goal of family beach photos is not to make every second perfect. Children may run in the wrong direction. The wind might move someone’s hair. Someone may start laughing when they are supposed to be looking at the camera. Those moments are part of photographing a real family.
Years from now, the expressions, sandy feet, laughter, hugs, and the way your children interacted with you will probably mean much more than whether everyone followed every direction perfectly. A strong family gallery can include the traditional portraits everyone wants while also preserving the smaller moments that show what your family felt like at this stage of life.

Children do not need to pose throughout the entire session. Walking, playing, holding hands, exploring the sand, and interacting with parents give children opportunities to move while creating genuine expressions and family photographs.
