Best Locations for Family Photos in Myrtle Beach You’ll Love

Planning a family photo session in Myrtle Beach or Pawleys Island? You’re about to invest time and energy into capturing moments that matter. Choosing the right location, timing, and preparation strategy is essential to creating timeless, natural portraits your family will love for decades. This stretch of the South Carolina coast offers some of the most scenic and versatile spots for beach photography anywhere on the East Coast.

At Pasha Belman Photography, we have photographed families across the Grand Strand for over a decade and a half. From soft sand dunes to quiet oak-covered trails, from bustling family vacation beaches to private estates, we know exactly where to shoot, when to shoot, and how to work with Myrtle Beach’s unique coastal light. We’ve completed 500+ family sessions along this coastline. We know which locations deliver clean, professional backdrops. We understand how light behaves at every hour, every season, and every weather condition. And we’ve learned how to make families feel comfortable, relaxed, and genuinely connected during their session.

This comprehensive guide shares our favorite family photo locations in Myrtle Beach and Pawleys Island, plus everything you need to know about timing, wardrobe, preparation, and what to expect. Whether you’re visiting from out of state or you’re a local capturing a milestone, this guide will help you plan a session that feels effortless and delivers images you’ll treasure.

The Myrtle Beach Advantage: Why This Coastline Is Perfect for Family Portraits

Myrtle Beach and the surrounding Grand Strand aren’t just beautiful vacation destinations. They’re ideal for photography for specific, technical reasons that make every image look better.

Wide, reflective beaches create natural fill light. The sand here is light colored and highly reflective, which means sunlight bounces up onto faces and fills in shadows naturally. This is why beach portraits look so luminous compared to shaded or forest portraits. You’re working with free, soft light that’s already optimized for portraiture.

60 miles of coastline means infinite location variety in one shoot. You can shoot dunes one session, piers the next, oak-lined trails after that, and maritime forests after that. Families never look like they’re at the “same beach” in different photos. That variety is a huge advantage for family portfolio diversity and for clients planning multiple sessions over the years.

Seasonal light patterns are predictable. Spring and fall deliver consistently beautiful golden-hour light. Summer and early fall occasionally bring dramatic storm skies. Winter delivers clean, cool tones. After 15+ years shooting this coast, we can predict light quality weeks in advance based on season and weather systems.

Large families and extended groups have space. The beaches are wide. The parks have multiple shooting zones. There’s no need to cram 20 people into a tiny space. Families can spread out, move naturally, and we have room to create varied compositions and move between setups quickly.

Timing Your Family Photo Session: Beyond “Golden Hour”

Let’s talk about the most common question we get: When should we schedule our session?

Golden Hour Is Your Best Option (And Here’s Why)

Golden hour—roughly the hour before sunset or the hour after sunrise—is called golden hour because the light is literally warm, soft, and glowing. The sun is low on the horizon, which means:

  • Light hits faces at a flattering angle
  • Shadows are soft and directional, not harsh
  • Skin tones look warm and natural
  • No one is squinting into bright sun
  • The entire scene has a naturally enhanced color grade

Here’s what we do differently: Every session is scheduled at golden hour. One session per time slot. No exceptions. This isn’t flexibility on our end—it’s a commitment to quality. We could schedule three sessions in a day if we worked at different times, but we don’t. We schedule one family per golden hour window to ensure everyone gets the best light and our full focus.

The Timing Realities: Summer vs. Fall vs. Winter

Summer (June, July, August): Sunset is late, often 8:30 PM or later. This works for families with flexible schedules, but younger kids may be tired or cranky by then. Early summer has great light quality. Late summer heat can be intense.

Spring (March, April, May) and Fall (September, October): Golden hour is earlier and more comfortable. Sunset is around 7:30 PM (spring) to 6:30 PM (fall). Kids are usually fresher. Light quality is exceptionally consistent. This is peak season for a reason.

Winter (November, December, January, February): Sunset is early, around 5:15 PM. This is actually ideal for families with young children who need early bedtimes. Winter light is clean and cool-toned. Fewer tourists mean empty beaches and fewer crowds in backgrounds.

Our Myrtle Beach photography weather guide breaks down month by month what to expect with light, crowds, weather patterns, and wind. It’s a valuable resource for planning the exact timing that works for your family.

The Five Best Family Photography Locations in Myrtle Beach

1. Litchfield Beach: Natural, Uncrowded Beauty

Litchfield Beach is one of the most peaceful and photogenic beaches in the greater Myrtle Beach area. Soft dunes, scattered sea oats, and wide stretches of undisturbed sand provide a dreamy, natural setting for beach photography. This location is perfect for families looking for a quiet, private session without tourist crowds or commercial infrastructure in the background.

Why we choose Litchfield: Fewer crowds mean cleaner compositions and a relaxed atmosphere. The dune line is photogenic without being overdone. Golden hour light here is particularly soft because there are fewer buildings and structures to reflect or block light. It works beautifully for barefoot, intimate family portraits.

Best for: Families seeking a peaceful, natural vibe. Smaller family groups. Families who prefer fewer people in the area. Sunset sessions in spring and fall.

2. Huntington Beach State Park: Dramatic Scenery & Versatility

Huntington Beach State Park is where families go when they want more than just sand. In a single location, you’ll find maritime forests, peaceful marsh boardwalks, historic architectural elements (the park’s iconic castle ruin), and wide-open beach. This variety means we can create completely different looks and backdrops within a single session without moving locations.

What makes it special: Iconic moss-draped oak trees create natural, organic framing. The marsh boardwalk offers a unique element you won’t find at other beaches. The castle provides historical character. The beach itself has clean sightlines. For extended family groups or families who want visual diversity, this location is unmatched.

Best for: Extended family sessions (15+ people). Families seeking diverse backdrops. Multigenerational portraits. Couples wanting a scenic, photogenic environment with character.

3. Debordieu Colony: Upscale, Timeless Elegance

Debordieu Colony, located near Georgetown and Pawleys Island, is a hidden gem for families seeking an upscale, refined setting. With its pristine private beaches, soft dunes, and exclusive atmosphere, Debordieu delivers timeless, elegant family portraits that feel polished and sophisticated. The beach here is meticulously maintained, less crowded, and offers clean backdrops without visual distractions.

Why it works: The refined environment naturally elevates portrait aesthetics. Large families have space to spread out without feeling cramped. Clean backgrounds with minimal clutter mean every family member is the focus. The light bouncing off the pristine sand is soft and flattering.

Best for: Upscale, editorial-style family portraits. Extended family groups (20+ people). Families seeking an elegant, sophisticated look. Sunset sessions with formal styling.

Note: Debordieu is about 45 minutes south of central Myrtle Beach. Sessions here include travel time in our scheduling.

4. Garden City & Murrells Inlet: Laid-Back Coastal Character

For families who love a little character and nostalgia, Garden City and Murrells Inlet offer cozy beach spots with old-school coastal charm. These areas have maintained their relaxed, unpretentious vibe while staying accessible. If your family prefers a casual, fun atmosphere over polished perfection, these neighborhoods deliver.

Why it works: The environment is laid-back, which puts families at ease. Vintage signage, weathered structures, and natural beach features create authentic backdrops. Kids are more likely to be themselves in a relaxed setting. The light is the same golden quality as everywhere else on the coast, but the vibe is different.

Best for: Families seeking candid, playful moments. Smaller family groups. Casual, lifestyle-oriented portraits. Families taking vacation photos during their stay.

5. Your Vacation Rental or Private Beach House

Some of our favorite sessions happen right at a family’s rental home. If your vacation house has beach access or sits on a pretty corner lot with mature trees, porch space, or a good yard, we can use it to tell your family’s story in a personal, intimate way. This removes travel stress and creates a session that feels uniquely yours.

Why it works: Minimal travel time for kids and grandparents means less stress and fatigue. Your own space is where families are most comfortable and relaxed, which translates to better portraits. The session feels personal and tied to your vacation memory. We bring the same creative direction and professional editing whether we shoot at a state park or your rental.

Best for: Multi-generational groups including grandparents or elderly relatives. Families with very young children or babies. Families who want session location to be part of their vacation story. Groups seeking minimal logistics.

What to Wear for Your Myrtle Beach Family Portrait Session

Wardrobe decisions can cause unnecessary stress. Here’s how to make it simple: prioritize comfort and coordination over matching.

Color Strategy: Soft Neutrals & Coordinated Tones

Light colors work beautifully at the beach because they complement the light sand and ocean backdrop. Warm tones harmonize with golden hour light. Neutral tones never distract from faces and connection.

Colors that photograph beautifully:

  • Whites and creams
  • Soft blues and aquas (light, not bright)
  • Blush, rose, and soft pinks
  • Tans, beiges, sand tones
  • Soft greens (sage, muted tones)
  • Warm neutrals (camel, oatmeal, champagne)

Colors to avoid:

  • Neon colors (reflect weird color casts onto skin)
  • All black (absorbs light, can look harsh)
  • Busy patterns and large logos (visually distracting, date quickly)
  • Overly bright or saturated colors

The Coordination Formula (Not Matching)

Pick 2-3 color families and mix them across your group. This creates visual harmony without looking overly staged.

Example: Mom in a flowy white dress. Dad in a light blue linen button-down with khaki shorts. Oldest kid in cream colored shirt with tan shorts. Youngest in soft blue casual wear. Grandma in a blush cardigan with cream pants. Everyone looks coordinated without matching outfits.

Every family that books a session receives a personalized wardrobe guide from us before their session. This guide shows color palettes that work, specific styling suggestions for your family’s dynamic, and photos of what clothing works vs. what doesn’t.

Fit & Comfort Matter Most

You’re on the beach. There’s sand, there’s wind, there’s potential water. Clothing needs to be:

  • Comfortable: If mom is tugging her dress or dad is sweating through his shirt, that discomfort shows in photos.
  • Weather appropriate: Linen, cotton, and breathable fabrics beat heavy materials.
  • Practical: You’ll be walking in sand. Shoes you can remove easily (or go barefoot) work better than tight sandals.
  • Kid-friendly: If your kids aren’t comfortable, they won’t smile naturally.

Shoes: Barefoot Works Best

Bare feet look natural, relaxed, and beachy. Plus, nobody wants sand in their shoes. Families who go barefoot tend to relax faster and interact more naturally. If you’re uncomfortable being barefoot, simple sandals or slip-ons work, but bare feet photograph the best.

Before Your Session: Preparation & Logistics

What to Bring

  • Water (lots of it): Heat, activity, and excitement can dehydrate quickly. A dehydrated family smiles less naturally.
  • Wipes and tissues: For sandy hands, runny noses, and sticky faces. They’re essential when kids are involved.
  • Sunscreen: Apply 30+ minutes before the session so it soaks in and doesn’t create shine in photos. Reapply between outfit changes if you’re doing multiple looks.
  • Backup outfits (optional): We love variety, and kids are unpredictable. If someone wants to change, we can shoot multiple outfit combinations in one session.
  • Phone/keys/wallet security: Leave valuables locked in the car or at your rental. Don’t carry them in pockets or bags during the session.

Weather & Wind: The Real-World Beach Session

Wind is almost always present. This isn’t a problem—it’s often an advantage. Windblown hair looks natural and dynamic in photos. Flowy fabrics look better with wind. The key is hair styles that work with wind, not against it.

For hair: Loose waves work beautifully. Updos or braids keep hair controlled. Fixed styles (like blow-outs) can look stiff. Embrace the movement.

For outfits: Flowy dresses look amazing in wind. Fitted clothing works too. Just avoid super lightweight fabrics that’ll fly up unexpectedly.

Weather changes: We monitor weather radar constantly leading up to your session. A 20% chance of rain doesn’t mean cancellation—quick showers pass. We’re looking at actual storm systems on radar, not weather app percentages. Some of our best sessions happen right after brief storms clear, when skies are dramatic and beaches are empty.

During Your Session: What to Expect

We’re Not Into Stiff Poses

Our approach is relaxed, natural, and focused on genuine connection. You’ll get direction—enough to look your best without feeling choreographed. Whether your kids are shy, outgoing, rambunctious, or quiet, the goal is to capture images that feel true to your family.

The Session Flow

First: Get the “must haves.” We start with classic family portraits—everyone looking at the camera, smiling naturally. We get several variations: all facing forward, some angles, group configurations. These are the images that go over the fireplace or on the Christmas card. We knock them out first while everyone still looks fresh and cooperative.

Then: We play. Once we have the essentials, we shift into movement. Walking, laughing, twirling, tickling kids, maybe wading in shallow water if you’re interested. These candid, in-between moments often become client favorites because they capture genuine emotion and real connection.

Sessions are supposed to feel good. We’re not rushing. We’re not stressed about time. We move efficiently so nothing feels hurried, but there’s no pressure. If a kid needs a break, we take one. If you want to try something specific, we make space for it. If someone melts down, that’s completely normal and we handle it with patience.

Session Length: How Long Is Right?

30 minutes works for smaller families or families with very young kids who tire quickly.

45 minutes is our most popular choice. It’s long enough to get variety and flow but short enough that kids stay engaged.

60 minutes works well for larger extended family groups, multi-generational sessions, or families who want outfit changes and multiple location looks.

Pasha moves efficiently during sessions, so you’re not waiting around. Every minute is spent creating images or making memories, not standing idle.

Why We Specialize in Large Extended Family Groups

We regularly photograph family reunions and extended family groups of 20+ people. Big groups require specific knowledge: how to organize people efficiently, how to create compositions where everyone is visible and connected, how to move quickly without losing the relaxed vibe, how to light large groups evenly.

After 15+ years and 500+ family sessions, we’ve developed a system for large groups that works seamlessly. Your extended family session won’t feel chaotic or rushed. It’ll feel organized and enjoyable, with results that showcase everyone and capture genuine connection.

Common Questions About Family Photo Sessions

What time of day is best for family beach photos?

Golden hour (the hour before sunset or the hour after sunrise) delivers the best results. Light is warm, soft, and flattering. Every Pasha Belman Photography session is scheduled during golden hour only, one session per time slot, no exceptions. This commitment to optimal light quality is why our family portraits have a signature luminous quality.

How long should a family photo session last?

Sessions range from 30 minutes to one hour depending on your package and family size. Most families with young kids do well with 45 minutes—long enough to get variety and natural flow, but short enough kids stay engaged. Larger extended family groups (15+ people) often benefit from the full hour to ensure everyone gets quality time and multiple configurations.

What should we wear for Myrtle Beach family portrait sessions?

Soft neutrals, whites, and muted tones work best—creams, soft blues, blush pinks, tans, and warm beiges. Coordinate colors across your family rather than matching exactly. Avoid bright logos, busy patterns, and overly bright colors. Prioritize comfort and fit. Bare feet look best. Every booked family receives a personalized wardrobe guide before their session with specific recommendations.

Do you photograph at locations outside of Myrtle Beach?

Yes. Sessions are available throughout the Grand Strand including Litchfield Beach, Pawleys Island, Debordieu Colony, Murrells Inlet, Garden City Beach, Surfside Beach, North Myrtle Beach, and Huntington Beach State Park. Location recommendations are included in session planning. We also offer sessions at your vacation rental or private beach house.

How soon will we receive our photos after our session?

Your fully edited gallery is delivered within 2 to 3 days. All images are high-resolution, print-ready files with full printing rights included. There are no upsells, no waiting weeks, no surprise charges. You get your photos quickly, professionally edited, and ready to share or print however you want.

Can you photograph large extended family groups?

Yes. Groups of 20 or more are welcome. Pasha has photographed 500+ family sessions and regularly handles extended family reunions along the Grand Strand. We know exactly how to organize and move large groups efficiently without losing the relaxed, natural feel. Your extended family session will feel organized and enjoyable, with results that showcase everyone and capture genuine connection.

What happens if the weather is bad on our session day?

We monitor weather radar constantly leading up to your session. A 20% chance of rain doesn’t mean cancellation—quick showers typically pass. We’re looking at actual storm systems on radar, not weather app percentages. Some of our best sessions happen right after storms clear, when skies are dramatic and beaches are empty. We’ll stay in touch and keep you updated.

Do you offer sessions at vacation rentals?

Yes. Some of our favorite sessions happen at family vacation rental homes. If your rental has beach access or a nice yard with mature trees or porch space, we can create beautiful portraits right at your location. This removes travel stress, keeps grandparents and young kids comfortable, and makes the session feel personal and tied to your family’s vacation.

What is your approach to posing families during sessions?

We prioritize relaxed, natural poses that capture genuine connection over stiff, choreographed compositions. You’ll get direction to look your best, but the goal is authentic emotion and real family interaction. We start with classic family portraits, then move into candid, in-motion moments. Sessions are supposed to feel good for your family, not stressful or overly posed.
