An Adorable Family Session at Myrtle Beach State Park

Family Portraits

We spent a golden evening this year photographing a family session at Myrtle Beach State Park, and it’s easily become one of our favorite spots to shoot. The park sits just south of the main strip and feels completely removed from it. No crowds, no noise, just pine canopy, sea grass dunes, and a stretch of quiet Atlantic coastline. It’s the kind of setting that makes a session feel effortless because the place itself puts people at ease the moment they walk in.

This particular session covered all three of the park’s environments in a single evening. We started under the shaded pine trail, where the light filters through the canopy and creates soft, even tones perfect for close portraits and candid moments. From there we moved through the sea grass dunes as the late afternoon sky opened up, giving us wide, airy shots with a real coastal feel. We finished at the ocean’s edge as the light turned warm, with plenty of room for the kids to run and splash.

If you’re planning your own session at the park, we put together a full guide covering the best spots, timing, and what to expect: Myrtle Beach State Park Family Photographers. This post is more of a behind-the-scenes look at one particular evening there.

Why This Spot Worked So Well

Most family sessions in Myrtle Beach happen right on the public beach, and the results are consistent but predictable. This session felt different from the start. The wooded interior trail gave the kids a shaded, intimate space to explore before we ever got near the water, and the trees softened the light in a way that made every frame easier to work with, regardless of the time of day.

Moving from the trail to the dunes and then to the ocean gave the whole evening genuine variety. By the end, the gallery felt like three different locations even though the entire session happened within a short walk of the parking area, which matters a lot when you’re working with young kids who don’t have unlimited patience for photos.

The park also limits beach access, so there were no strangers wandering into the background, no umbrellas, no chair rentals. Just clean sand and open sky. For a family who wanted photos that actually felt like Myrtle Beach without looking like a crowded resort beach, this was exactly right.

Timing Made the Difference

We scheduled this session for the hour before sunset, and it made a real difference. The light came in low and warm, wrapped around everyone naturally, and turned the sea grass and sand into something that looked almost painted. Sessions earlier in the day fight overhead light and harsh shadows, even under the trees.

This family was visiting for the week and booked with only a couple days’ notice, which the park handled just fine. Its consistency makes it easy to deliver strong results even on short notice, since the location itself is already doing a lot of the work.

A Family Worth Photographing

What made this session memorable wasn’t really the location, it was how naturally this family moved through it. The younger kids had space to run and explore instead of standing still for posed shots, and the older ones relaxed once they realized there wasn’t a rigid script to follow. By the time we hit the beach, everyone was just being themselves, which is always the goal.

If you’re planning a family session at Myrtle Beach State Park, we’ve got a full breakdown of locations, timing, and what to expect on our Myrtle Beach State Park Family Photographers page. We also photograph families throughout Murrells Inlet, Pawleys Island, and the rest of the Grand Strand, you can see more on our Myrtle Beach family photographers page.
